REA Group has been dealt a major leadership blow, with Chief Product and Audience Officer Melina Cruickshank resigning after six years at the property giant.
Cruickshank, who led the company’s 800-strong consumer product and advertising division and oversaw a $200 million annual product development budget, is stepping back to take time away from professional life.
Outgoing CEO Owen Wilson confirmed the move, noting Cruickshank’s decision was driven by family priorities.
“Melina has decided that now is the time to explore new opportunities outside REA Group and that she needs to take some time out from professional life in the coming months to spend some time with her family,” Wilson said in a statement.
The timing could not be more critical for REA.
With a market capitalisation north of $32 billion, the business is staring down its fiercest challenge in years as US real estate powerhouse CoStar Group cements control of Domain, Australia’s second-largest property portal.
CoStar chief Andy Florance personally visited Australia earlier this year with 18 senior executives to set the battle plan for Domain, describing the acquisition as the largest and most significant in the company’s near-40-year history.
Cruickshank’s departure leaves a gap in REA’s product and audience leadership just as the competitive landscape intensifies.
In her farewell message, she thanked colleagues and singled out Wilson’s role in steering the business.“My thanks to Owen for his vision, leadership, and humour,” she said.
“And to the incredible people of Product & Audience, it’s been a complete privilege.”
REA now faces the dual challenge of finding a successor capable of maintaining innovation momentum while defending its dominant market share against a newly energised Domain under CoStar’s ownership.
