Harcourts Foundation Awards $30,000 Grant to PCYC North

PCYC North’s Reset Opportunities for Youth (ROY) Program is designed to meet young people where they are, providing a safe and supportive environment where they can build confidence, develop positive relationships and recognise their strengths and potential.

The Harcourts Foundation has awarded PCYC North a $30,000 grant to support the delivery of ROY and create more opportunities for young people across northern Tasmania to reconnect and discover positive pathways for their future.

PCYC North is a not-for-profit sporting and recreational organisation with a particular focus on young people and the broader community. Its youth programs focus on early intervention and diversion, working with young people aged 10 to 18 before challenges can escalate into disengagement or offending.

Head of the Harcourts Foundation Pauline Smith said the program’s focus on early intervention strongly aligned with the Foundation’s commitment to supporting initiatives that make a meaningful difference in their communities.

“RESET is about giving young people the opportunity to build confidence, resilience and a sense of what is possible before challenges become harder to overcome,” Ms Smith said.

“We know that having the right support and positive influences around you can make a significant difference, particularly during those important teenage years.

“The Harcourts Foundation is delighted to support PCYC North as it continues this important work and gives more young people the practical skills, experiences and connections they need to take their next step with greater confidence.”

Harcourts Tasmania Co-CEO Kate Littlejohn said supporting organisations working directly with young people was an important part of contributing to the local community.

“We’re incredibly proud to see the Harcourts Foundation supporting PCYC North and the work it is doing with young people across northern Tasmania,” Ms Littlejohn said.

“The strength of this program is that it doesn’t simply focus on where a young person is today. It gives them opportunities to discover their strengths, develop practical skills and see a positive pathway forward.”

The funding will support PCYC North’s work to provide young people with positive experiences, supportive relationships and practical opportunities. Its programs are tailored to the age, year level and needs of each group and include adventure-based resilience-building activities, real conversations and sessions delivered with collaborative partners.

For young people participating in the Year 10 RESET Pathways program, the vocational focus includes opportunities to develop skills and knowledge to help make career choices, with activities including First Aid, White Card and Materials Handling. The program also aims to encourage participants to continue their education through to Year 12 or be better equipped to enter the workforce after Year 10.

Over the past seven years, the early intervention program has supported young people who may have experienced challenges including family violence, drug and alcohol abuse, fractured home lives, family criminal activity, living in care, poverty and negative peer influences.

The program aims to help participants build resilience, strengthen teamwork and become more aware of support available through their schools and communities.

PCYC North currently has the capacity to deliver around three programs each school term, with the potential to reach more young people as additional resources become available.

The organisation recently transitioned from Launceston PCYC to PCYC North, reflecting its expanding regional reach and commitment to serving young people across northern Tasmania.

The $30,000 grant is one example of the Harcourts Foundation’s ongoing commitment to supporting communities across Tasmania. More recently, the Foundation launched its “60 Days to Put $100,000 Back into Tasmania’s Communities” initiative, supporting local organisations and community programs across the state.
