From Rugby to Property: Former Wallaby Matt Gibbon Joins Harcourts Northern Rivers

Forced into a career pivot by injury, the international prop brings his high-performance work ethic, building background, and rural roots to the Ballina real estate scene.

Matt Gibbon spent years putting his body on the line. After playing 85 Super Rugby games for the Melbourne Rebels between 2018 and 2023, and earning a spot in the Wallabies squad for six Test matches, a severe knee injury forced the formidable prop to hang up his boots and rethink his future. Now, he is trading the scrum for the property market, launching a new career in real estate with Harcourts Northern Rivers.

Though Gibbon is a qualified electrician by trade, his knee injury meant that crawling through cramped roof spaces was no longer a viable option. Instead, he found a natural alternative in real estate—an industry where his sporting resilience, communication skills, and building knowledge could instantly translate.

"Real estate drew me in because it has that exact same grind as rugby," Gibbon explained. "You have to put in the work, stay determined, and the results follow. Coming from my building and electrical background, I already understood property, so it was a natural fit. Plus, I think my knees are quite relieved I’m no longer navigating ceiling cavities."
