Every property profile on realestate.com.au now shows a home energy efficiency score, after REA Group took a minority stake in Adelaide-based energy intelligence platform VALAI and added its Home Efficiency Score to the portal.
The score turns a property’s energy data into a rating out of 10 and compares it with the suburb benchmark. It takes in heating, cooling, hot water, appliances and the thermal fabric of the building, and a higher score means lower energy consumption and running costs.
The feature also suggests upgrades that would lift a home’s rating, including solar and home batteries, a hot water heat pump and air conditioning, along with estimated savings and the rebates available. Homeowners can request quotes from local installers through a form within the feature.
REA Group announced the investment on Friday. It did not disclose the size of its stake.
REA Group chief product officer Jonathan Swift said Australians recognised that energy efficiency could cut costs and environmental impact while adding value to their homes, but financial constraints and knowledge gaps were still limiting take-up.
“realestate.com.au research shows us that two in five Australians are unsure about how to improve efficiency in their homes, despite seven in 10 planning to invest in energy efficient features in the next five years,” Mr Swift said.
“Adding this new home energy efficiency score feature to every property profile will help to bridge a clear knowledge gap. It also offers homeowners a simple way to learn more about their property’s energy efficiency, giving them specific information and practical steps to improve its energy performance.”
VALAI founder and chief executive Allys Todd said the partnership would make the energy performance of Australian homes, and their likely comfort and running costs, more visible.
“Australians should know what their home is actually costing them and what they can do about it,” Ms Todd said. “With home energy efficiency scores now on realestate.com.au, that intelligence is available to every property owner in the country, not just those who know where to look.”
What it means for agents
The score puts a home’s energy rating, the upgrades suggested for it and the rebates on offer on a page that owners and buyers already use when researching a property. For agents, energy performance becomes one more figure clients can see, and ask about, at appraisal and during a campaign.
VALAI, which trades as Home Efficiency Australia, is a female-founded property technology company based in Adelaide. It provides AI-powered energy intelligence across residential and commercial property.
