There’s a frustration that comes from knowing you’re capable of more but feeling as though you’re doing it with one hand tied behind your back. You have the ambition and you’re prepared to do the work, but you wish you had the support, freedom and leadership to help you get there.
Yet when you think about moving, all the reasons to stay come rushing in. You’ve built relationships, you have commitments and you’re earning an income, so the thought of interrupting everything you’ve worked hard for feels daunting. I understand that, but while you’re considering what a move might cost, it’s worth asking what staying is costing you.
Perhaps you want more flexibility, room to build your own brand or a greater share of the income you generate. Perhaps you’re tired of asking for support that never arrives, or you’d like someone to sit down with you, understand where you want to be and help you build a plan to get there. Those are reasonable ambitions, and you shouldn’t feel uncomfortable wanting a working life that rewards your effort and gives you room to grow.
After 33 years in real estate, I’ve seen talented people put those ambitions on hold for far too long. Often, they’re waiting to feel confident before they take the next step, when confidence can also come from discovering that you have options and people willing to help you explore them. There’s something hopeful in the idea that when you jump, you fly, although it helps to know someone has thought about the landing.
A move can be planned, with the timing, existing commitments, communication and onboarding worked through together. Your first few weeks should have structure, support and a focus on keeping you moving forward. You’ve worked hard for your momentum and protecting it deserves attention.
At Urban, we start by understanding what you want your career to make possible, whether that’s building a team, growing your brand, having greater flexibility or creating wealth that gives you choices beyond your next commission payment. Then we sit down with you and work through how to get there, with honest conversations about splits, support and expectations, alongside leadership that stays involved as you put the plan into practice. Your future deserves more than an encouraging conversation followed by “good luck”.
And somewhere in all of this, there should be room to enjoy yourself, to feel proud of where you work, have a laugh with your colleagues and come home with some energy left. Success ought to feel good to live with. You don’t have to decide today, but if you’ve been having the same conversation with yourself for months, perhaps it’s time to have it with someone who can help. Ask the questions, explore what’s possible and give the future you keep imagining room to become real. You may find that the move you’ve been worried about is the one that gives you room to fly, and we’d love to help you explore that.
