For years, I’ve heard the phrase “Success leaves clues” in motivational speeches and business books. It suggests a neat path to achievement—just follow the breadcrumbs left by others, and you’ll find your way. I’ve even said it myself a few times. But lately, I’ve started to think this platitude is one of the biggest clues that we’re completely missing the point.


The world has changed. We can’t just rely on pre-packaged quotes and expect them to prepare us for what’s coming. This isn't about finding a simple trail; it's about hacking our way through a dense, unfamiliar jungle.

So, let’s explore why we need to move beyond easy answers and embrace the messy, difficult, and ultimately more rewarding work of creating real change.


The Emptiness of Generic Advice

We’ve all seen them: glossy Instagram posts with a mountain vista and a quote like "Dream big, work hard." They’re meant to inspire, but they often feel hollow because they ignore context. My version of success is different from yours, and my path will be shaped by my unique circumstances.

So, what does real influence look like? It’s about creating change that lasts. It’s pushing people and organisations to be better, to think bigger, and to tackle problems that actually matter. It’s measured not by followers, but by the tangible, positive impact you have.

This kind of influence requires a deep sense of responsibility. It means you’re willing to have the hard conversations and stick with a problem long after the initial excitement has faded. It’s the difference between leaving a clue and leaving a legacy.
